MGAHINGA

NATIONAL PARK

Explore the stunning Mgahinga National Park. Home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, and breathtaking volcanic landscapes.

Rising between 2,227m and 4,127m above sea level, Mgahinga is a visual masterpiece that seems to float among the clouds. Its three majestic summits capture the eye and transport you into the infinite vastness of the sky. They overlook a dense bamboo forest canopy, a sanctuary for the rare mountain gorillas and endemic golden monkeys, among a sea of other species. This "gathering of peaks" often disappears behind the mist for hours, only to reappear spectacularly depending on the whims of the weather.

It is no wonder that photography safaris are among the most sought-after activities here. Although it is Uganda’s smallest park at a mere 33 km², Mgahinga offers a fascinating historical trail centered on the Batwa people, a tribe whose very existence is intimately woven into the life of the forest.

In addition to meeting the Batwa, you will discover the Garama Caves, a site of exceptional historical significance. This immense underground refuge, composed of six compartments, once served as the royal headquarters for their kingdom. There, you can sense an ancestral human presence—a unique atmosphere that cannot be explained, only experienced.

The Three Picks

From a distance, their conical silhouettes might suggest that these peaks offer the same hiking experience. Make no mistake! There is no better way to discover their unique characters than by climbing them all.

  • Mount Muhavura (4,127m): If you are looking to burn calories the adventurous way, this is your ideal "gym." Due to its steep gradient, the ascent is demanding, but it guarantees total immersion in the pure freshness of the mountain. At its summit lies a crater lake whose scenic beauty revitalizes the soul. Furthermore, this mountain marks the border, with one foot in Uganda and the other in Rwanda.

  • Mount Sabinyo (3,669m): This peak is perfect for those seeking a gentler hike to relax the mind and stretch the muscles. It takes an average of 5 hours to ascend and 2 to 3 hours to descend. Its summit is the exact meeting point of the borders of Congo, Uganda, and Rwanda. You can have one leg in Rwanda, the other in Congo, your hands in Uganda, and your heart in "no man’s land."

  • Mount Gahinga (3,474m): Named after the "small piles of stones" found locally, this peak offers a more accessible trek. The park takes its name from this very mountain. It is particularly famous for its crater swamp zone and lush bamboo forests, which serve as the preferred habitat for the golden monkeys.
